In keeping with our vision and mission to assist youth to reach their full potential and improve their quality of life, we undertake several activities that are described below.
After School Tutoring
AYTF provides after school tutoring at two venues – West Island and Park Extension area.
In the West Island, tutoring is offered to two groups of students:
• High school students (grades 9 to grade 11) who need help with their homework or have difficulty in Science and Mathematics.
• Elementary school students (grades 5 to 8), are offered instruction in Mathematics, English, French, current news, essay writing, etc.
Both these tutoring sessions are held at Riverdale High School, 5060 Boul. Des Sources, Pierrefonds.
In the Park Extension area, tutoring sessions have expanded rapidly to meet the growing need (of the elementary and high school students) of the Park Extension community. Currently, six levels of tutoring sessions (in English, Mathematics, current news, essay competitions, etc.) are attended by over 50 children. In addition, one-on-one homework help is provided to students as needed.
These “class room format” tutoring classes are held on Saturdays at the Park Extension Community Centre (William-Hingston Building, 419 St Roch st. Montreal).

Bursaries/Scholarships
AYTF provides various “need” based scholarships to students entering CEGEPs and those already attending CEGEPs. Currently, scholarships are being administered by and offered in three CEGEPs – John Abbott College, Vanier College and Dawson College. Recipients are selected on academic merit and financial need. For example, the selection criteria include academic and extra-curricular performance, social leadership and family income. The number of scholarships and the award amounts are determined annually in collaboration with the CEGEPs depending on the need. The award amounts range from $500 to $1,000.
Students of John Abbott, Vanier and Dawson colleges should apply directly to their respective student aid offices. Students from other CEGEPs should forward their application to AYTF. Click here for more information on the application process and eligibility criteria and to get an application form.
Merit Awards
AYTF promotes and recognizes youth excellence in academics, sports and community service by instituting awards and other prizes. Unlike scholarships these awards are based purely on merit and not on means. The purpose of these awards is to encourage youth to channel their energy towards positive and socially desirable avenues. The premise being that academic achievement alone is not sufficient to produce well rounded individuals – qualities of leadership and social engagement are also necessary. At present awards in four categories have been instituted for Elementary and High school level students. These are: Best Overall Student Award, AYTF Volunteering Award, Most Improved Student Award and Junior Student Award.

Summer Program
AYTF sponsors elementary school students to attend summer camps. Our objective here is to provide children with limited means the opportunity to attend summer camps that offer interesting physical and mental activities. Spending some time in a summer camp will provide them with a stimulating and enjoyable experience and hopefully channel them towards more positive ways to spend their spare time. The camp is run by PEYO (Park Extension Youth Organization) who also select qualifying children, on the basis of need, from the Park Extension area. AYTF also advertises the summer camp sponsorship program in local community newspapers and recommends candidates from the families it is in contact with through its after school tutoring program.
Mentoring
In keeping with AYTF’s promotion of education in a broader sense i.e. beyond only academic learning, a mentoring program has been in place at the Park Ex venue. Senior students are encouraged to take on a greater role in the teaching of younger students as teaching assistants. They are also encouraged to assist with organization of social events and in certain administrative duties. AYTF staff work closely with certain students as they learn and progress in these roles. The result of the mentoring process is that these young people strengthen their ability to take on responsibility, improve their organization skills and gain overall confidence. In addition they learn the value and experience the joy of volunteering and helping others.
